Williams Alligator
Trend

- What it shows
Three smoothed lines, the jaw, teeth and lips, that open and close like a mouth. When they are apart the market trends, when they are tangled it is resting.
- How it is built
Each line is a smoothed average of the bar's midpoint, with a different length and shifted forward in time: jaw 13 and 8, teeth 8 and 5, lips 5 and 3.
Default: Jaw 13 (offset 8), teeth 8 (offset 5), lips 5 (offset 3).
- How traders read it
- Lines in order and apart: a trend.
- Lines tangled together: the market is sleeping.
- Price far from the lines is read as stretched.
- History
Described by Bill Williams in his book Trading Chaos (1995).
