Hull Moving Average
Trend, HMA

- What it shows
A moving average built to follow price closely without much of the usual delay, so its curve is smooth and turns early.
- How it is built
It takes a weighted average of half the length, subtracts a weighted average of the full length, and smooths the result with a weighted average over the square root of the length.
Default: Length 9, source close.
- How traders read it
- The slope shows direction: rising is up, falling is down.
- A change of slope is read as an early sign of a turn.
- Fast lines turn early and can whip in a range.
- History
Developed by the Australian trader Alan Hull and published in 2005.
